Hispanic Heritage Month Family Movie Night – Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3: Viva la Fiesta! & Healthy Quesadillas

This Saturday night was family movie night at our house.  Since we are celebrating Hispanic Heritage month we chose a movie that gave us some opportunities to learn about the Latino culture and reinforce in our children the importance of their Latin American roots. We all went together to get the movie at Red Box, after we reserved on their website from home.

The children also helped me shop for the supplies we would need to make a Mexican themed craft and snack.

Even though Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3:Viva La Fiesta ! is it’s still a silly movie that centers on the talking doggies’ crazy adventures this sequel, which I found to be better than the previous two,  also touches important family issues like children’s need to become more independent, being united as a family and finding your inner strength. Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3: Viva La Fiesta! is a great family comedy that can be used as a conversation starter to teach children about  growing up, adjusting to a new school and about the Latino and Mexican culture. You can read the rest of my review on the #CouchCritics website.

This was movie was really a great choice for watching during Hispanic Heritage month. We discussed the Quinceañera tradition and it’s meaning and the kids learned the difference between mariachi music and other types of music.

To get us into the festive mood for this movie we did a doggie inspired papel picado craft to decorate the living room.  We used bright colored tissue paper and cut out different doggie shapes.

My daughter, who loves helping me out around the kitchen, learned to make quesadillas.  To make it more fun and festive we cooked green, white and red quesadillas symbolizing the colors of the Mexican flag and paired it with delicious pineapple salsa. You can see the recipe and more pictures in my Google+ album HERE.

Since we are a bilingual family and I am always looking for opportunities to show my children the importance of their home language and culture we watched the movie in Spanish.  The translation was great and my children got most of the jokes.  When the Quinceañera fiesta started they even got up to dance. They liked it so much that they asked to watch it again so the second time we watched in English.

This is a movie that children of all ages will enjoy and I would highly recommended.
