You know how it is, you’re looking at holiday photos of your kids opening presents and wonder, who is that person in the background? That can’t be me?  I don’t look like that?  That picture was my wake up call and I decided I was going to stop that diet roller coster and focus on changing my lifestyle.

At 40 something I feel more fit and lean than in my 20s and now that I have been able to get rid of the weight I am focusing on strength.  Since I was a teen I dreamed of competing, back then I was a pretty good gymnast but I busted my knees and with that my dreams of competing disappeared.  I never thought that at my age I would have the opportunity to compete but recently I started doing Crossfit and I feel like I found something that I am not only really good at but I can also compete in.

I have been training a lot as my goal is to eventually compete in CrossFit and EAS has helped me ensure that I am getting the protein I need to increase strength and build muscle steadily.  I have tried a lot of different products but found that EAS Myoplex ready-to-drink products has less carbs and calories than others. Another thing that I like about EAS is that it is very affordable, protein drinks are usually quite expensive but with EAS I get the nutrients and protein I need to improve my performance and my strength without breaking the bank.

Tips For Building Muscle And Strength When Working Out

• Set goals and always improve. Keep track of the your accomplishments from how much you can lift to the amount of reps you can do with on a certain amount of weight or for a given exercise and always set goals to improve those numbers. I keep a dry eraser board on your best lifts and the most reps you’ve done with a certain weight on an exercise. Constantly strive to improve those numbers.

• Change things around. When you lift weights don’t stick to a routine; your muscles and fibers get used to that routine so you need to change things around and surprise your muscles with new movements and new routines.

• Find balance in your workouts. You need to maintain balance in your exercises not only on each side of your body but also with your pulling and pushing movements.  It’s not necessary to do your balance workout on the same session or on the same day but do it in the same week. One day you can do chest and the next focus on your back.

EAS

Not all cardio is created equal. Doing cardio is a must but not all cardio is created equal.  You need to do cardio to improve your resistance and to burn calories but long-distance running or cycling can break down muscle, to prevent this focus on short intense burst of cardio exercise like sprinting.

• Eat better and focus on protein. In the past getting stronger was linked to getting bigger;  eating more carbs and gaining weight but that also meant getting heavier. Getting stronger does not mean you need to get bigger or heavier: the key is to eat better focusing in increasing the amount of protein and eating less carbs and calories and focus on gaining only muscle weight. To accomplish this look for good sources of lean protein like chicken and turkey. With a moderate amount of carbs and few calories EAS has 100% whey protein that helps me build muscle and repair muscle after working out. To build muscle you can use an easy rule of thumb: eat at least the same amount of grams of protein as the number of pounds you weight.

It’s really convenient that I can find EAS at Walmart soI just grab it when I go grocery shopping every week and there is no need to go out of my way to get it.

  1. My 30’s has me feeling down on energy. I’m not into muscle building, but I’m working-out for bringing my body into a better fit one. I workout with my husband, we are doing Insanity. It works for us.

  2. I love your video, and YES! You can totally compete in Crossfit! I eat low carb and a high fat/high protein diet to help me lose weight and get healthier. I need to add in some weight lifting but I’ve been so out of the habit the last year that I haven’t started the routine yet. Reading all these posts has definitely helped put a little fire behind me! #client

  5. Cesar,

Great post. You raise a good point about setting goals; I think this is one of the most important aspects of fitness and in life. Once I started setting goals for my self I started to improve in the gym and at everything I did.

I have a few friends who really enjoy doing CrossFit, though I haven’t tried it for myself yet. I’m a big fan of functional fitness training so I think I might give it a try. Are you still doing it?

    Keep up the great posts!

  6. My biggest problem is changing up my workout routine. I tend to stick with same sets over and over – so I have to remind myself to change things up otherwise, I guess the body tends to recognize patterns and not really workout those core areas of the muscles anymore. Great piece!

  7. Hey,

I’m reading your blog for around a year now, basically since I have started to work out and you have greatly helped me improve. Recently I was struggling with my real life issues, and didn’t find much motivation and time to work out, but you helped me to regain my harmony again. Great work!
