Relativity
Relativity is a bilingual book that explains the concepts of high, low, near, far, hot, cold, etc. and how these are relative depending on what two things you are comparing. Written by Michael Smith with illustrations by Octavio Oliva this book is a great tool to teach children critical thinking. Everything in this world is relative to something else and this is not an easy concept to understand. With the help of this bilingual story children are taken on a fun journey that simplifies the concept of relativity. “There is no high, there is no low, just levels of something taller or below. If you think going to china is far, what would you think about going to a star? ”
The text bounces and rhymes along in both English and Spanish, which is in itself a real feat. Michael Smith truly does a superb job with the translation. The book is filled with illustrations that keep the child engaged and interested. I am a fan of Octavio Olivas illustrations and loved the amazing job he did in My Ducky Buddy. I would have loved to see Octavio Oliva pour a little more color and life into the illustrations in this book as they lack a little luster but that certainly does not take away from the book itself.
My four year old loved the part where the book explains how a car is fast compared to how fast kids can go, but kids go fast compared to a snail. You could really see his little head processing the information and grasping the concept. My daughter who is 7 and is on the Autism spectrum has difficulty processing abstract concepts and even though some of the concepts where harder for her like how something can be good or bad depending on what you compare it to, the idea of how things are far or near depending on what you compare them to really caught her interest and she keeps asking if something is near or far or nearer or further. I believe the illustrations really helped and I am thrilled that days after reading this book she is still pondering about the concept of relativity and asking to read it again so she can completely understand it.

Relatividad es un libro bilingüe que explica los conceptos de alto, bajo, cerca, lejos, caliente, frío, etc. y como estos son relativos dependiendo que dos cosas estés comparando. Escrito por Michael Smith e ilustrado por Octavio Oliva este libro es una excelente herramienta para enseñarles a los niños a pensar de forma crítica. A través de este libro bilingüe los niños son llevada a través de un viaje que simplifica el concepto de relatividad. “ No hay algo alto ni algo bajo, solo niveles de arriba y abajo. Si crees que China queda lejos, ¿y las estrellas del universo?”
El texto se mueve alegremente a través del libro y rima tanto en inglés como en español lo cual es por si solo una gran hazaña . Michael Smith realmente hace un magnifico trabajo con respecto a la traducción. El libro esta lleno de ilustraciones que mantienen el interés e los niños interesados. Me han gustado muchísimo las ilustraciones de Octavio Oliva en otros libros como en Mi Amigo el Pato pero en Relatividad me hubiera gustado ver un poco mas de color pues les falta algo de vida pero esto no le quita merito al libro.
Mi hijo de cuatro años estaba fascinado con la parte del libro que explica como un automóvil es rápido comparado con la velocidad de un niño, pero un niño es rápido comparado con la velocidad de un caracol . Realmente podías ver como su pequeña cabecita estaba comprendiendo el concepto de la relatividad. Mi hija que tiene 7 años y tiene Autismo tiene muchísima dificultad para entender conceptos abstractos y aunque algunos conceptos presentaron mas dificultad que otros como la idea de que algo puede ser bueno o malo dependiendo de que cosas estés comparando, la idea de cómo las cosas están mas cerca o lejos realmente le llamo la atención y constantemente me pregunta si esto o aquello esta mas lejos o cerca. Realmente creo que las ilustraciones ayudaron a a que empezara a entender este concepto y días después de leer el libro sigue pensando en el concepto de la relatividad y pidiendo leerlo de nuevo para poder entenderlo completamente.
