Staying healthy and fit is something that I work hard at and one of my favorite activities is hiking. I really enjoy being outside, in contact with nature breathing the fresh air and taking in the beauty of my environment. There is just something about hiking that makes you feel alive, it helps you decompress and makes you feel more connected to nature.

10 Tips For A Great Hike:

1. Work out to strengthen your body and improve resistance. When working out make sure you are focusing on strengthening your legs and your core. To strengthen your legs include some squats in your workout combining high repetitions 3 sets of 10 to heavy low reps 3 to 5. Do some deadlifts for your hamstrings and core making sure to keep a straight back so you don’t injure yourself. Include some pull ups in your workouts, as you having the strengths to pull up your weight and more is important when hiking.

2. Warm up before you start. In order to reduce the risk of an ankle sprain and pulled muscles on the trail, prepare your body with dynamic stretches. Take a few minutes to stretch your calves, quads, and hamstrings.

3. Keep your energy up. It’s important to keep your blood sugar levels stable by providing your body with the enough fuel. Try to eat a 100- to 200-calorie snack every hour.

4. Wear the right shoes for the hike. Depending on the terrain and the area choose hiking shoes, boots or tennis shoes that are comfortable and well broken in.

Hydration should be constant. Chill your water bottle or water bladder the night before and drink 4 to 6 ounces of water every 20 minutes.

5. Pick the right clothes. Use clothing that will wick moisture while keeping you warm (or cool) yet being light. If you are hiking regularly and for long periods of time high-tech synthetic fibers like techwick, coolmax or capilene.

7. Protect yourself from the elements. Make sure you are wearing lots of sunscreen and the largest brimmed hat you can stomach, no matter how dorky it looks.

8. Add foods that reduce inflammation to your trail mix like almonds, tart cherries and dried blueberries.

9. Stretch after your hike. Stretching after a hike decreases the chances of injury, can help to prevent muscle imbalances, and speeds the recovery process. When you get back to your car at the trailhead, focus on your calves, quadriceps, hamstrings, and hip flexors. To get the full benefits make hold each stretch for at least 30 seconds.

10. After your hike eat foods that will aid with muscle recovery. Milk, berries, and peanut butter are all great and easy options. When I get home I usually make a berry and banana smoothie and sometimes add a spoonful of peanut butter.

Getting Back To Nature With Mother Dirt

As a nature lover, part of living healthier and better includes making choices to live “cleaner” by using products that are not only better for us but also better for the environment. Even though I spend a lot of time outdoors, aside from sunblock I do not like to use any skin products. It just feels unnatural to me to cover my skin with creams and lotions filled with chemicals. That is why I was thrilled to hear about the Mother Dirt line of skincare products which help you maintain a balanced microbiome on your skin.
Healthy bacteria are a natural and essential part of the human body ecosystem and by using antibacterial products we are killing those bacteria that are necessary for a healthy and natural balance in our bodies. Mother Dirt is based on the concept that less is more and they believe in going back to nature by using natural products that replace essential bacteria lost by modern hygiene & lifestyles.

I have been using the Mother Dirt line of products, including the AO+ Mist, the shampoo and the cleanser, for over a week and I was pleasantly surprised by the results.

Natural odor control. Even though I was taking a huge risk (my wife was terrified) I stopped using deodorant when I started using the AO+ Mist and I did not perceive any offensive BO. I live in Florida where it’s still pretty hot and I sweat a lot and the AO+ Mist worked and I did not need deodorant at all! During the couple of days where I worked out strenuously, there was some funkiness and I did have to supplement with my regular deodorant but for the most part and on regular days Mother Dirt’s AO+ Mist did the trick! I’ve always seen antiperspirants as a necessary evil but I am happy to ditch or cut down on a product that I know is just blocking my sweat glands and masking smells with perfumes.

Improvement in my skin’s moisture balance. Because I spend a lot of time outdoors the skin on my arms and legs gets really dry while the skin on my face, especially my nose, is always very oily. Since I started using the Mother Dirt Cleanser a noticed a big change in my skin: my face no longer feels oily and my arms and legs don’t seem to be as dry.

I really feel that my skin is thanking me for using Mother Dirt; a product that restores that natural healthy microbiome balance in my body. My wife was so impressed she has started using the cleanser on her face and she has also seen an improvement in the texture of her skin.
