We use it for everything from bagels to cream cheese frosting. I love making my famous artichoke dip with it and also use it for cooking chicken and other savory dishes.   Who can resist that soft cream cheese spread?

On my last grocery shopping trip to Sam’s club I noticed that the Philadelphia cream cheese now comes in a new packaging with 4 cream cheese containers instead of 3.  It’s the same amount of product for the same great value but because it comes in four 8 ounce tubs it stays fresh longer.

philly cram cream cheese ingredients #shopI’ve been baking up a storm this holiday season and the other day my kids asked for some guava turnovers. We love making pastelitos de guayaba (guava pastries) but this time I thought I would try and make something a little different and more festive.  So I came up with the idea of making some easy and quick guava and Philly cream cheese puff pastry wreaths.

Ingredients

  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tablespoon water
  • 6 Philldepphia cream cheese softened
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 5 ounces guava preserves or paste about 2/3 cup
  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry from a 17 1/4-ounce package, thawed
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup chopped macadamias

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 4oo°F with rack in middle.
  2. Beat egg with a fork, then put 1 1/2 tablespoons egg in a small bowl with water (1/2 tablespoon) and lightly beat to make egg wash.
  3. Put remaining beaten egg in a food processor with cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla and purée until smooth. Transfer to a small bowl.
  4. Roll out pastry on a waxed paper and cut into 3 rectangles.
  5. Spread cream cheese mixture in a 1 inch-wide strip down middle of pastry, leaving 1/2inch borders on all sides.
  6. Dollop guava preserves lengthwise on another pastry leaving 1/2inch borders on all sides.
  7. Starting along a long side, tightly roll up the dough, pinching edge against loaf to seal.
  8. Loosely twist the two pieces of rolled dough around each other then form a wreath pinching the edges together.
  9. Brush top of dough with some egg wash.
  10. Place wreath carefully on baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes or until puffed and golden-brown,
  11. While wreath is baking, prepare sugar glaze by stirring together confectioner’s sugar, water, lemon juice and vanilla extract.
  12. When wreath is done, transfer to a cooling rack.
  13. Cool for a few minutes then drizzle the glaze over the warm wreath.
  14. Sprinkle with chopped macadamias or other nuts.

making guava cream cheese pastry #shop My daughter really enjoyed making them with me, specially rolling the dough and braiding it to make the wreath.  For me cooking together as a family is one of my favorite holiday traditions.

  1. How delicious this sounds! My husband loves guava but I’ve never made anything with it – you’ve inspired me to do something special for him this coming weekend.
