Finca El Espinero near Tecpán is one of the most unique family farm stays in Guatemala, combining a wonderfully rustic forest cabin with walking trails, farm animals, lagoons, birding and the kind of peaceful setting that makes it easy to slow down and spend real time together. Surrounded by pine and pinabete forest in Guatemala’s cool highlands, it feels much farther from the city than it really is.
For families who love animals and spending time outside, it is especially wonderful. Our days revolved around walking through the forest, visiting the cows and horses roaming around the finca, feeding llamas, checking on the sheep and birds, looking for hummingbirds and returning to the cabin when the highland air turned cool.
My connection to El Espinero goes back much farther than this particular stay. My family has been coming here for years to choose and cut our Christmas tree, and I have memories of visiting with my dad, my children and my nephew during pinabete season. I had looked at the wooden cabin many times and wondered what it would be like to stay here after everyone else went home.
Spending the night gave me an entirely different perspective on a place I thought I already knew. Once the day visitors left, El Espinero became a quiet highland retreat filled with birds, cool air, forest paths, grazing animals and evenings around the fire. My kids love animals, so they were basically in heaven.

Why Finca El Espinero Is One of My Favorite Family Farm Stays in Guatemala
What makes El Espinero work so well for families is that you don’t have to fill the day with scheduled activities. The experience is happening around you. Cows and horses graze around the property, there are animals to visit, paths to explore, birds everywhere and enough open space that kids can spend much of the day outside.
We were the only overnight guests during our stay, other than the finca workers who were there during the day, and that gave us the wonderful feeling of having our own private forest retreat. We could wander without rushing and then return to the cabin whenever we felt like it. At the same time, there was always someone nearby who could help us with things like getting the fireplace or outdoor fire going.
I especially loved that our time here followed its own rhythm. We walked, watched the animals, cooked together, read, played games and spent long stretches outside. It felt less like checking into a hotel and more like having a cabin of our own in the Guatemalan highlands for a couple of days.
THE CABIN
Inside the Cozy Family Cabin at Finca El Espinero
The cabin is one of my favorite things about staying here because it feels completely connected to the setting. Massive wood beams, log walls, handmade furniture and large windows looking directly into the trees give it the warmth and character of a real mountain cabin.
There is a comfortable main-floor bedroom as well as additional sleeping space in the loft, making the cabin a great setup for families. The loft is reached by a wooden ladder, which is part of its charm and makes it especially fun for older children and teens who are comfortable climbing up and down.

The loft is accessed by a ladder, so I think the upstairs sleeping area is especially well suited to older kids and teens. Families traveling with younger children can plan to use the main-floor sleeping areas instead.
The cabin also has a full kitchen and dining area, which we loved having. We cooked breakfast and dinner here, lingered over meals and enjoyed being able to stay tucked away at the finca rather than organizing our days around restaurant reservations.
Outside, the covered porch has a large wooden table and seating overlooking the trees. We spent quiet mornings here with breakfast and coffee while listening to the birds and watching the finca slowly come to life.
Everything about the cabin encourages slower mornings and cozy evenings, which is exactly what I wanted from this stay.
COZY HIGHLAND NIGHTS
Warm Fireplaces Make Chilly Highland Nights Part of the Experience
One of the things I loved most about staying at El Espinero was experiencing the cooler side of Guatemala. We visited in August and at around 6:30 in the morning the temperature was in the low 50s Fahrenheit, around 11°C. It was perfect sweater weather and made the cabin feel even cozier.
The fireplaces became part of our evening routine. Once the temperature dropped, we would light a fire and settle into the cabin. Sitting beside a real wood fire surrounded by log walls while the forest outside grew dark and cool was one of my favorite parts of our stay.
If you love cozy cabin getaways, this is one of the things that makes El Espinero especially memorable. Pack sweaters, warm pajamas and layers so you can enjoy those cool highland mornings and evenings. During the colder months, especially November and December, I would also bring a couple of extra warm blankets for maximum coziness.
DIGITAL DETOX
Finca El Espinero Is the Perfect Place for a Family Digital Detox
One of the things that made our stay so restorative was how naturally we disconnected. The cabin doesn’t have WiFi or a television, and cell service is light enough that our phones quickly stopped being part of the day. Instead, we spent our time outside, played board games, read, cooked together and sat around the fire.
We could get enough cell signal by walking a little uphill when we needed to send a message or check in with the outside world, so we never felt completely cut off. I would simply download anything you may want before arriving and then take advantage of the opportunity to put the phones away for a while. For our family, having fewer digital distractions was a huge part of what made this stay feel so peaceful.

THINGS TO DO WITH KIDS
Farm Animals, Forest Trails and Family Activities at Finca El Espinero
The animal encounters were easily one of the biggest highlights for my kids. Cows and horses move around the finca, and there are also llamas, sheep, chickens, geese, peacocks and other animals to see. Because this is a working finca rather than a conventional attraction, interacting with the animals feels relaxed and wonderfully natural.
We fed the llamas, spent time around the horses and cows, and my kids even milked a cow for the first time. These were simple experiences, but they ended up being some of the things we talked about most afterward.
There are also trails throughout the property, and walking them gave us a chance to experience completely different landscapes within the finca. Some areas feel open and pastoral with animals grazing nearby, while other paths lead into dense, cool forest where moss covers the tree trunks and everything becomes wonderfully quiet.
The lagoons add another easy way to spend time outside, and there are small boats that make this especially fun for families. One of the things I appreciate about El Espinero is that the activities don’t feel like a checklist. You simply head outside and see where the day takes you.
At night we roasted marshmallows around the outdoor fire pit. After a day walking through the forest and spending time with the animals, gathering around the fire was the perfect ending.
BIRDING
Birding at Finca El Espinero Adds Another Reason to Stay Overnight
Birding ended up being one of my personal highlights of our stay. I got up early with my camera and walked around the property while everyone else was still waking up. Those first quiet hours of the morning were beautiful, with misty highland air, almost no one around and birds moving through the flowers and trees.
I saw four different types of hummingbirds during our time at El Espinero, along with species including the Guatemalan Flicker and Steller’s Jay. The red-hot poker flowers scattered throughout the finca were especially good places to wait for hummingbirds, and I could easily have spent an entire morning photographing them.
If you enjoy birding, I think staying overnight here is particularly worthwhile because you are already in place for those early morning hours. Even if you are only casually interested in birds, bring binoculars. The combination of highland forest, flowering plants and open areas makes simply walking around the property much more interesting.
SEASONAL EXPERIENCES
Christmas Tree Cutting and Pumpkin Picking at Finca El Espinero
Long before we stayed overnight, El Espinero was part of our family’s Christmas tradition. We have come here to choose and cut our pinabete Christmas tree, and those visits are some of the memories I most strongly associate with this finca. Christmas-tree season creates a completely different atmosphere, with families coming to spend the day among the trees and choose one to take home.
El Espinero is a working pinabete finca, which is part of what gives the property so much character. The trees aren’t simply decorative landscaping around the accommodations. They are part of the landscape, history and seasonal traditions of the finca itself.
There is also a pumpkin-picking season when families can choose a Halloween pumpkin from the pumpkin patch and enjoy additional seasonal activities. If you are planning a fall or Christmas visit, I would check the finca’s current seasonal schedule because these events make El Espinero especially fun for families.
PLAN YOUR STAY
How to Plan a Comfortable Family Stay at Finca El Espinero
Bring groceries and make the most of the full kitchen. We stopped for lunch before heading to the finca and then brought everything we needed for breakfast and dinner. Cooking at the cabin became part of the experience and meant we could settle in without needing to leave again.
Give yourself plenty of time for the scenic drive in. The final stretch is about seven kilometers along an unpaved road, which is part of what allows El Espinero to feel so secluded once you arrive. Depending on road conditions, I would allow around 20 to 30 minutes between the finca and the main highway.
Prepare for a true digital detox. Download maps, books, music, movies for the drive or anything else you want before arriving. At the cabin, embrace having your phones take a back seat for a while. We found enough signal uphill when we needed to communicate.
Pack for Guatemala’s cool highlands. Sweaters, warm pajamas and layers made our August stay comfortable, particularly during early mornings and evenings. I would add even warmer layers and extra blankets if visiting during November or December.
Confirm your arrival instructions before driving up. El Espinero feels more like arriving at a private country cabin than checking into a traditional hotel, so have the current key and arrival information saved before you begin the final part of the drive.
WHERE TO EAT
Make Your Finca El Espinero Getaway Even Better With a Meal in Tecpán
Tecpán has some excellent restaurants, so I like the idea of making a great lunch part of the journey to El Espinero. Chichoy and Rincón Suizo are two of my longtime favorites in the area, while Katok is probably the best-known option and an easy choice if you want a large menu and a classic Tecpán experience.
Our favorite rhythm was to enjoy lunch before heading up to the finca, arrive with groceries in the car and then settle in completely. Once we were surrounded by the forest and animals, cooking our own meals at the cabin felt far more appealing than going anywhere else.
MAKE A WEEKEND OF IT
Turn Your Finca El Espinero Stay Into a Tecpán Family Weekend
I think El Espinero is perfect as the centerpiece of a relaxed Tecpán weekend. Have lunch on the way, spend the afternoon walking around the finca and visiting the animals, settle in for a cozy evening at the cabin, then wake up early for birding and another slow morning before exploring more of the area.
