We recently had a little Monsters University themed movie night party at home. My kids look forward to movie night all week as they really don’t have time to watch much TV the rest of the week. Movie night is really a great opportunity to improve their Spanish language skills as we always pick a movie that they can watch in Spanish. We loved Monsters Inc and where eagerly waiting for Monsters University to come out on DVD so we could watch it at home and I have to say this prequel was just as fun as the first Monsters movie and the translation was awesome.
For our little Monsters U party I made some tie-dye Sully cupcakes that came out looking really nice. The kids loved helping out with simple tasks in the kitchen like mixing the batter and since there was quite a bit of color mixing for these treats we also took advantage of that and they learned how to mix basic colors to make new colors.
Ingredients
- 1 box of your favorite cake mix or use your favorite cake recipe
- 1 tub of white icing or make your own vanilla icing from scratch
- food dies
- small candy eyes you can get these at Michael’s
- gummy lifesavers
- black writing icing
- blue sugar pearls
- cupcake liners
Instructions
-
Prepare the batter as directed. Mix the batter in one large bowl.
-
Split the batter into two separate bowls into.
-
Use blue food die to make blue batter and use the blue and red dies to make purple batter.
-
You should now have 2 diferent colored batters.
-
Grease a cupcake pan or use cupcake lines.
-
Pour one blue batter and then layer purple batter on top of it until cupcake liners are about ¾ full.
-
Using a toothpick or the back of a spoon swirl the two colors together just a bit.
-
Cook the cupcake according to the directions on the package.
-
Cook cupcakes completely in wire rack before applying the icing.
-
While the cupcakes are baking you can make the icing. Again you can make this from scratch or buy icing in the store, just make sure you start off with white icing.
-
Just like before split the icing into two separate bowls.
-
Use blue food die to make blue icing and use the blue and red dies to make purple icing.
-
Make sure that the cupcake have cooled off before applying icing.
-
Apply blue icing to most of the cupcake and leave a couple of spots on each cupcake that you will cover with the purple icing.
-
Using a knife on it’s side tap lightly on the icing to form the small peaks that to give Sully a furry look.
-
Place the eyes on top of the icing and use a blue sugar pearl for the nose.
-
Draw the mouth with the black writing icing.
-
Cut the horns from a purple gummy lifesaver and place on Sully’s head.
If your kids like the Monsters University characters they will really enjoy these fun and colorful cupcakes. You can see other great Monsters University themed party ideas including crafts and snack recipes on my recent post HERE.
