When is Three Kings Day Celebrated?

Día de Reyes, or Three Kings Day, is celebrated on January 6th and marks the visit of the Three Wise Men, or Magi, to the baby Jesus in Christian tradition. This day is extraordinary for children in many Spanish-speaking countries, as it’s customary for the Reyes Magos (Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar) to leave gifts to discover in the morning. Just as the Wise Men brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to Jesus, children receive presents as a symbol of love and the holiday spirit of giving.

Celebrating Epiphany and the arrival of the Three Kings was part of the Christmas traditions in Guatemala, where I grew up. We’ve kept this tradition alive in our family, and our kids receive gifts from Los Reyes Magos every year on January 6th.

What Types of Gifts Do the Three Kings Bring to Children?

The tradition of giving gifts on Three Kings Day is a special and exciting time, especially in Latin American countries and Spain.

Kids write letters to the Three Wise Men, or Reyes Magos, telling them about the good things they’ve done and the presents they hope to get. It’s like writing to Santa Claus at Christmas. They put a lot of heart into these letters and sometimes even send them to the sky with balloons, hoping they’ll reach the Wise Men. Writing a letter to the Three Kings or even a letter to each of them is a great Three Kings Day activity. I’ve included some cute printables that kids can use to write their letters to the Three Kings.

On January 5th, the night before Three Kings Day, kids get everything ready for the Kings’ visit. They put their shoes out in a spot where the Kings will see them, like near a window or at the end of their bed. The shoes are there to be filled with gifts when the Kings arrive. Kids also leave out grass, hay, or water as a treat for the camels that have carried the Wise Men on their long journey. They believe this kind gesture will make the Kings happy and bring them more gifts. You can also download and print this fun Three Kings Day envelope and stamps to make sending the letter to the Reyes Magos even more fun!

When January 6th comes, children wake up to find their shoes filled with presents, candies, and other fun things. It’s a reward for being good all year. In Spain, this day is a big deal, and kids often get more gifts on this day than on Christmas. In Latin America, the types of gifts can be different, from small toys and sweets to new clothes and things for school. In our home, the kids usually get something to wear, something to read, and something they need. For example, the Three Kings will usually bring them:

  • A bilingual book, now they usually get a chapter book in Spanish
  • Something to wear like a new jacket, shoes or clothes for school
  • Something they need, like shiny new school supplies, or something for their favorite hobby or sport

In our family, each of my children gets one present from each of the Three Kings: Baltasar, Melchior, and Gaspar. So, when I’m wrapping the gifts, I use these special tags to show which King the present is from.  It makes opening their presents even more fun because they feel like they’re getting something special from each of the wise Magi. It’s a small touch that adds a lot of excitement to our Three Kings Day celebration.
