Day of The Dead Catrina Marshmallow Snacks With Free Printables

The Day of the Dead has become one of my family’s favorite celebrations. The Day of the Dead in Guatemala is celebrated in a very different way than it is in Mexico.  When we moved to the US we learned to embrace the Latino culture as a whole and have gotten to share with fellow Latinos online and offline about foods, culture and celebrations from all across Latin America including Day of the Dead celebrations.

The tradition of Dia de los Muertos as a day to celebrate those family members and friends who are no longer with us is something we’ve always done but now we have introduced into those celebrations the calaveras (sugar skulls) and my favorite Day of the Dead icon is by far La Catrina. La Calavera Catrina is a modern depiction of the Aztec lady of the dead Mictecacihuatl, she was the keeper of the bones of the deceased in the underworld and was celebrated during the monthlong Aztec festivals that honored the dead and that later, when mixed with Christian beliefs, became today’s Day of the Dead celebrations.

We have done fun Day of the Dead parties in the past using the sugar skulls as a in inspiration to create treats for the kids and truly celebrate our loved ones who are no longer with us and remember them with a fiesta! This year we created a fun Calavera Catrina and sugar skull inspired treat using marshmallows.

Materials

Large marshmallos

Wooden skewers or lollipop sticks

Food markers

Catrina dress printable that you can dowload HERE.

Instructions

Using the food markers have fun painting the Calavera Catrina faces on the marshmallows.

Print the Calavera Catrina printables on card stock. Cut the different pieces.

Stick the marshmallow onto the lollipop stick.

Glue the the body of the catrina to the lollipop stick.

Glue both short sides of the rectangle together to make the Catrina’s skirt and glue it to the torso.

Glue the flower onto the dress.
