Café No Sé: The Original Mezcal Speakeasy

Café No Sé’s hidden mezcal bar is the definition of a hidden gem. Café No Sé  is one of Antigua Guatemala’s best late-night hangouts, and it offers a completely different experience from the city’s more polished speakeasies. Part dive bar, part cave, Café No Sé has become an iconic spot with its grungy, dimly lit atmosphere, strange decorations, and live music that keeps the energy buzzing late into the night.

The bar is famously home to the first mezcal bar outside of Mexico, hidden behind an old 1950s-style refrigerator door. Known as the “Mezcal Bar,” it’s a cozy space that comes alive after hours when other bars close. The walls are scrawled with graffiti, quirky doodles, and messages from visitors. Burlap coffee sacks stitched together form the entrance to this mezcal haven, adding to the eclectic and unpolished vibe. Café No Sé offers a wide selection of mezcal by the shot, along with cheap drinks like draft Gallo beer. Despite the unassuming and divey appearance, it’s the perfect spot to stay long after other places close, soaking up the laid-back energy of Antigua’s nightlife.

Adding to its mystique, Café No Sé also features a Maximón room, where visitors leave shots or beers for this bizarre Mayan folk saint. With a banned music list scribbled on cardboard, including artists like Lady Gaga and Metallica, and live music almost every night, Café No Sé is a favorite for both locals and travelers. While bigger bars like Mono Loco and Reilly’s Irish Tavern may catch the spotlight, Café No Sé is the spot where the real, unfiltered, late-night fun happens. Café No Sé is all about community. It’s the kind of bar where you can strike up a conversation with a fellow traveler, enjoy some live music, and spend hours sipping on mezcal in a cozy, candle-lit corner.
