In preparation for the upcoming games I created a spicy avocado and cilantro hummus which makes the perfect dip for one of our favorite game time snacks: Alexia onion rings! Watching basketball games with my family is something that we really enjoy. It brings us together and it helps us bond. We make an event of watching the games by bringing out lots of delicious food and sometimes even my parents come over to watch the games with us.

Getting ready for our basketball game time family celebrations is part of the fun and we like to prepare different appetizers and treats that everyone can enjoy and that are also nutritious and delicious. We love onion rings and always get the Alexia onion rings to make at home, we only need to bake them for about 20 minutes and they come out golden, crunchy and delicious and since they are not deep fried, but baked, they have all the crunch without the greasiness and are better for you. To accompany the onion rings I created a spicy avocado and cilantro hummus.

The time is here game time that is, and my family can’t wait to celebrate and enjoy watching our team play! One part of the fun is the preparations we take before the game, and one of those things is the preparation of the food and treats we are having to fully enjoy the moment.

Spicy Avocado & Cilantro Hummus
Ingredients
- 1 15 oz can chick peas, well drained
- 2 ripe Hass avocados cored and peeled
- 3 Tbsp olive oil plus more for serving if desired
- 1 1/2 Tbsp tahini
- 4 Tbsp fresh lime juice
- 1 tablespoon chopped garlic
- 1/2 cup fresh cilantro leaves
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper
- 1/8 tsp cumin
- 1 tablespoon of Chipotles in adobo sauce or dried chipotle flakes
Instructions
-
Mix the chick peas, olive oil, garlic, lime juice, tahini and cilantro in the food processor and pulse 10-15 times until smooth.
-
Add the avocados and cumin and chipotle and mix until smooth.
-
Add salt and some pepper to taste.
-
Serve and sprinkle with fresh, chopped cilantro and chipotle flakes for a little bit of extra heat.
-
If you are serving this for the whole family don't add the chipotle, serve in individual portions and each person can add the chipotle flakes to their hummus to give it the desired heat.
Everyone loved the combination of the crispy and flavorful onion rings with the smooth, fresh taste of the cilantro. I have to say that this might be my favorite hummus recipe and the combination of the onion rings and the hummus was a total slam dunk!

To make this a bit more festive I created some fun basketball themed printable that you can use as cupcake toppers or to give your appetizers a festive feeling. You can download the free basketball party printable HERE.

We buy Alexia brand onion rings and sweet potato fries on a weekly basis, you can find them at Walmart at the frozen food section. My kids love the sweet potato fries and I love onion rings so I get a few bags of each. You can follow Alexia’s food products on Facebook and at Pinterest for more great recipe ideas!
