We’ve stayed at many of the best hotels in Atitlán and Porta Hotel del Lago stands out as one of the best options when it comes to family friendly hotels in Panajachel. Its location in the heart of town makes it the perfect starting point for exploring Panajachel and other villages around lake Atitlán.
What truly sets Porta Hotel del Lago apart for families is its range of family-friendly amenities and activities. There’s a nice pool where my kids had a blast, and we enjoyed exploring the lovely gardens. There’s also free internet which my kids took advantage of more than I did. The hotel even has a gym, though we were too busy having fun to use it.

When planning our family trip to Lake Atitlán in Guatemala, I knew that having a fantastic view of the lake from our hotel room was a must. We wanted to soak in the natural beauty of this magical place. Watching the mesmerizing transformation of the lake and its surrounding volcanoes, from the soft, tranquil blues at dawn to the vibrant purples and oranges at sunset, was an unforgettable experience. That’s why Porta Hotel del Lago stands out as one of the best Atitlan hotels for families. Its unique semi circle design facing the lake and private balconies in every room allowed us to fully enjoy this breathtaking view. It made our family’s stay even more special.
Hotel del Lago: Great Pool In Panajachel
Hotel del Lago has one of the best pools in Panajachel which is perfect for families and kids. This pool is big and has lots of comfortable chairs where you can relax and watch your kids have fun. It’s surrounded by beautiful gardens, and the best part is the view of the lake – it’s just wonderful!
If you’re traveling with your family, especially with kids, this pool is just perfect for a refreshing swim and enjoying the beautiful lake view after exploring. We loved relaxing in the pool at the end of the day and I loved that it was never crowded and we almost always had it all to ourselves. This might not be the case if you’re staying on a weekend though.
Modern Rooms Blend With Guatemalan Design
During our stay at Porta Hotel del Lago in Panajachel, we were delighted by the charming rooms. I love how the hotel seamlessly combines modern comforts with authentic Guatemalan design, creating a truly unique atmosphere. I highly recommend booking a room with stunning lake views; waking up to that breathtaking scenery each morning was a remarkable experience. However, it’s worth noting that the hotel also offers rooms with garden views, so you can choose the one that best suits your preferences. I loved coming back to our room after a day of exploring Lake Atitlan and enjoying the sunset views of the lake and the volcanos. It was one of the best parts of our days there.
We stayed in a standard room, it was just the three of us and the room was comfortable and great for our two night stay. However I would highly recommend the suite for families. Located at the end of each floor it has a living room area with a sofa bed and two double beds or a king bed. It has a double balcony and provides the best lake or garden views and the bathroom has a tub and shower.
One of the Best Restaurants in Panajachel
The restaurant at Porta Hotel del Lago, known as the Cakchiquel Restaurant, was a delightful dining experience that made our stay even more special. They had a wide variety of dishes to choose from, so everyone in our family, even the picky eaters, found something they loved. Whether it was breakfast from the buffet or dinner, each meal was a treat for our taste buds, and the way they presented the dishes showed how much care they put into everything they served.
The restaurant’s location was fantastic too. It sat right behind the pool area, offering stunning views of the pool and the majestic volcanoes in the background. We loved how open and spacious the restaurant was, and it made our dining experience even more enjoyable as we could take in the beautiful sights of Lake Atitlán while we ate. The restaurant’s bar may have been small, but it had a great selection of drinks, and we all enjoyed their delicious cocktails. The Cakchiquel Restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, with decor and artwork that celebrated the heritage of the Cakchiquel people. And, oh, the desserts were amazing!
One dish that stood out was the Pepián, Guatemala’s national dish, a hearty stew made with chicken and a rich, aromatic sauce made from roasted seeds, chilies, and spices, served with tortillas. I’ve had Pepián in many places, but this one was truly exceptional and flavorful. It was an unforgettable culinary experience during our stay at one of the best Atitlan hotels for families, and it added a special touch to our family memories.
