In my family, being active is super important. Not only does it keep us busy and having fun as a family, which is important in itself;, but being active gets us to exercise and promotes a healthy lifestyle.
My children are completely different from each other when it comes to choice of physical activity. My son is a sporty guy. We don’t push him to “choose” a sport, he hasn’t found one he loves yet, he likes them all! My daughter, on the other hand, isn’t sporty like her brother due to a motor deficit. She still loves the outdoors and exploring, however, so we encourage her to get outside and be active in a way that she enjoys.
What I really love is how we can do these things together and make being active and healthy a part of our regular lifestyle. Iit isn’t a “special event”, it is something we do a few times a week. Sometimes it might be a pickup game of soccer or walking around the park – we all do what we love, with the people we love; and it’s always a great time. No planning, money or hassle involved, getting active is free, healthy fun for the whole family.
Need some inspiration to get more active as a familia? You can always check out our friends at Fuel up to Play 60 in english or, now, en espanol where you wi’ll find great tips and support for making healthy lifestyle changes for your entire family. If you want to take a page from the Diaz Family “play” book try these tips to motivate your kids to stay active, together.
Make fitness a priority. Start by watching sports or, playing sports on game systems that encourage standing and movement and then take the game outside. Introducing a sport away from the screen will encourage your kids to involve themselves more frequently on their own.
Let them love what they love. You might be a huge baseball fan and your daughter just loves rhythmic gymnastics. Encourage it! Any sport can help your child get fit and teach them valuable traits, like sportsmanship. All sports are good sports! If you can find one that the whole family loves, even better!
Encouragement not criticism. No one is an expert at a sport from the get go. Don’t be overbearing about kids and sports. If you notice they need to work on a skill then bring it up in a fun way that encourages you, the parent, to get out there and work on that skill with your child. And be sure to cheer all their successes, giving them confidence and motivation to continue!
Make ‘em move. Think up ways to add extra movement to everyday activities. From racing to the mailbox , dance party clean up sessions, or an extra lap around the grocery store,; all the extra activity adds up!
Take it outside. A walk after dinner, trip to the park seashell hunting on the beach…they all count towards your total activity. Better yet, they are all activities you can do as a family and create opportunities to bond while everyone gets fit.
