I was born and raised in Guatemalan, and since I was a kid Las Verapaces region has always been one of my favorite places to visit. Nestled in the heart of the country, this area offers a unique opportunity to experience the real Guatemala and taking a few days to visit the Cobán region is definitely one of the best things to do in Guatemala. It’s a place where you can see more authentic attractions and less riddled with tourists from lush cloud forests and natural wonders like Semuc Champey and the Candelaria Caves to hidden gems like Hun Nal Ye and stunning waterfalls like the Saltó de Chilascó waterfalls and Las Conchas. Las Verapaces is filled with off the beaten path natural wonders waiting to be discovered.
Cobán and the Verapaces Region
Nestled in the heart of Guatemala, the Cobán and the Verapaces region is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. This region is part of the central highlands and encompasses two distinct Guatemalan departments: Alta Verapaz and Baja Verapaz. A Guatemalan department is similar to a state or province in other countries, serving as an administrative division with its own local government. The capital city of this vibrant region is Cobán, located in Alta Verapaz, which serves as a gateway to exploring the area’s lush landscapes, coffee plantations, and diverse ecosystems.
The Verapaces region is characterized by its mountainous terrain, abundant rainfall, and verdant forests, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Alta Verapaz, the northern department, is known for its cloud forests and stunning attractions like Semuc Champey and the the Lanquin Caves, and lesser known hidden gems like the Candelaria Caves, the Las Conchas Waterfalls and the turquoise pools of Hun Nal Ye. Baja Verapaz, to the south is the best place to look for the elusive resplendent quetzal and hike to one of the highest waterfalls in Central America, the Salto de Chilascó. It also offers cultural treasures like the Rabinal Achi festival, a UNESCO-recognized traditional dance. Together, these departments form a region that is rich in biodiversity and cultural significance, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the natural splendor and vibrant traditions of Guatemala.
How to Get to Las Verapaces
You can explore Las Verapaces on your own by renting a car, you can also take a shuttle to Cobán o travel by bus. But the easiest way to see this area of Guatemala is by booking a tour with a reputable tour company. (See more specific information about traveling to Cobán in the Cobán section of this article.)

This serene destination offers a unique opportunity to spot the elusive Resplendent Quetzal in its natural habitat along with beautiful hiking trails through Guatemala’s cloud forest habitat.

Located about 3 hours from Guatemala City, Ranchitos del Quetzal is accessible via CA-9 North and CA-14. From Antigua, the drive takes about 3.5 hours. The reserve is well-signposted and easy to find.
What to Expect: Is Visiting Ranchitos del Quetzal Worth It?
Ranchitos del Quetzal is private natural reserve in the cloud forest of Baja Verapaz, just steps away from the Biotopo del Quetzal the reserve not only offers the chance to see Guatemala’s national bird but it also has comfortable and cozy accommodations and a restaurant serving local dishes. The reserve has well marked hiking trails through the beautiful cloud forest and alongside a series of small waterfalls and pools, which are perfect for taking a dip if you don’t mind the cold water.
We found that staying the night was such a great idea as taking the early morning birding tour is the best way to see the resplendent quetzal as well as many other birds. Spending the night at Ranchitos del Quetzal also gives you the opportunity to take the night tour which is very unique and a great way to see wildlife that only comes out at night. The serene environment makes it an ideal place to connect with nature and it’s also a great birding spot.

Accommodations: Stay at Ranchitos del Quetzal
Ranchitos del Quetzal offers cozy and comfortable rooms at a very affordable price. For me, this was an ideal option as I loved waking up in the middle of the cloud forest. Another option is to stay in Cobán, which is only about an hour away. If you’re staying in Cobán, I highly recommend Hotel Casa Gaia, located in the heart of the city yet surrounded by a private nature reserve. For a more central and budget-friendly location, Hotel Don Juan Matalbatz is a great option.
Tips When Visiting Ranchitos del Quetzal
When visiting Ranchitos del Quetzal, bring binoculars and a good camera to capture the stunning birdlife. Wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring a light jacket, as the mornings can be cool. The best time to visit is early morning when the quetzals are most active so your best option is to stay there for at least one night so you can take the early morning birding tour.
Off the Beaten Path: Hike to the Salto de Chilascó Waterfalls
One of the highlights of my trip was hiking to the stunning Salto de Chilascó waterfalls. At approximately 130 meters (426 feet) high, this is one of the highest waterfalls in Central America.

The hike to Salto de Chilascó is about 4.5 miles (7.2 kilometers) round trip, taking approximately 4 to 5 hours to completeand it is considered moderately challenging, with some steep and uneven sections. Hikers should be prepared for a mix of easy flat areas and more demanding inclines. The trek takes you through lush forests filled with diverse plant and animal life, giving you a real sense of the natural beauty of this region. The waterfall’s impressive height and the scenic hike through diverse ecosystems make this hike worth it!

The festival takes place from January 19th to 25th, culminating in the performance of the Rabinal Achí play on the 25th. The dance is characterized by its vibrant costumes, wooden masks, and rhythmic music played on traditional instruments. The performance reenacts the historical conflict between the Rabinal and K’iche’ Maya peoples, featuring ceremonial dances and dialogues. The Rabinal Achí is one of the last remaining precolonial dramatic interpretations, offering a rare and authentic cultural experience. When visiting Rabinal for the Rabinal Achí festival, it’s helpful to learn a bit about the K’iche’ Mayas and the story behind the performance to enhance your understanding. Arriving early is crucial as this popular festival attracts many tourists and tour groups. Plan to attend events from January 19th to 25th to fully experience the cultural activities leading up to the main event. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes, as you’ll be standing and walking a lot. Accommodation and Dining in Cobán
Cobán offers a range of accommodation options to suit different budgets and preferences. I enjoyed my stay at Casa Gaia, a charming eco-lodge located in a private nature reserve. The rooms are comfortable and specious and having a restaurant on site was a big plus for us. It even has a short hiking trail. I love that it’s surrounded by nature yet it’s in the heart of the cituy. Hotel Don Juan Matalbatz, is centrally located, and I really liked the cozy accommodations at affordable prices. My kids and I loved the delicious breakfast which is included.
While in Cobán, make sure to try some traditional Guatemalan dishes. Kak’ik, a rich and spicy turkey soup, and Suban-ik, a hearty stew made with chicken, beef, and pork, are two of my favorites Guatemalan dishes. Chuchitos, small tamales filled with meat and tomato sauce, are also a must-try. For dining, we loved la La Abadia whit it’s cozy atmosphere and delicious local Guatemalan cuisine. El Peñascal is another great spot, popular with both locals and tourists, serving a variety of Guatemalan and international dishes made with fresh, local ingredients.

Cobán is a great starting point for adventures in Alta and Baja Verapaz. Spend a few days to explore the area and its attractions fully. Begin your activities early to make the most of the day and enjoy cooler temperatures. The weather in Cobán is generally mild, with cooler temperatures in the early morning and evening, so layering is recommended. Wear light, breathable clothing during the day, and add a light jacket or sweater for the cooler times. Don’t forget sturdy footwear for hiking and exploring natural sites.

Orquigonia offers a fascinating guided tour that provides detailed information about the diverse species of orchids and other plants in this unique environment. The reserve is home to approximately 50% of Guatemala’s orchid species, including the Monja Blanca orchid, Guatemala’s national flower. The tour, which lasts about 2 hours, takes you through interpretive trails designed for observing and learning about these amazing plants.
Even though we only spent a couple of hours here, the small nature reserve has so many beautiful orchids, and we learned so much about these amazing plants. The highlight for me was being guided by the owner, who is incredibly passionate about orchids and conservation. The work at Orquigonia is significant not only for orchid conservation in Guatemala but globally, and they have discovered and named several new orchid species.

Semuc Champey is a stunning natural monument located in the heart of Guatemala. Known for its series of turquoise pools and lush surroundings, it is a must-visit for anyone exploring Alta Verapaz.

Semuc Champey is situated near the town of Lanquín in Alta Verapaz. From Cobán, it’s about a 2.5-hour drive (approximately 65 kilometers). Thanks to a new asphalted road completed in 2024, the journey is much smoother, and you can easily drive there yourself. Shuttle services are also available from Cobán and other major towns.We took a private tour from Coban with Guat2do Travel Experiences which was a great option as we could really tailor our trip to our needs and our schedule.
What to Expect: Is Visiting Semuc Champey Worth It?
Semuc Champey, meaning “Where the River Hides Under the Earth” in Mayan, features a natural limestone bridge under which the Cahabón River flows. On top of this bridge, a series of crystal-clear, turquoise pools are perfect for swimming and relaxation. The surrounding lush tropical forest offers opportunities for hiking and wildlife spotting. The hike to the mirador (viewpoint) provides a spectacular panoramic view of the pools and the jungle.
Semuc Champey is one of my favorite destinations in Guatemala. I have been going there since I was a child with my family, and last year I got to take my son, which was a bucket list trip for me. I love that it’s a little off the beaten path and you can get a sense of the real Guatemala and the natural beauty of the area as there are not as many tourists as you will find in places like Antigua and Lake Atitlán.

What to Expect: Is Visiting Grutas de Lanquín Worth It?
The Grutas de Lanquín offer a captivating look at the underground world with its stunning formations. While it may not be the most spectacular cave system in Guatemala, it is worth visiting if you are in the Lanquín or Semuc Champey area. The caves feature large chambers filled with intricate stalactites and stalagmites, and an underground river runs through them. Visitors can explore the caves’ dark, cool environment, which provides a stark contrast to the tropical heat outside.

I found the Grutas de Lanquín to be a worthwhile addition to my trip. The caves are usually included in day tours to Semuc Champey, making it easy to visit both attractions. One of the highlights was watching the bats emerge from the cave at dusk, a fascinating natural spectacle.

Tips When Visiting Grutas de Lanquín in Guatemala
When visiting the Grutas de Lanquín, plan to arrive in the late afternoon to witness the bats emerging at dusk. Wear comfortable hiking shoes, as the cave floor can be slippery and uneven. Bring a flashlight or headlamp, as parts of the cave are not well-lit. Carry enough cash for entrance fees and local purchases, as card payments may not always be accepted. The entrance fee is around Q30.00 per person. It’s a good idea to bring a jacket, as the cave can be cool and damp.

For accommodations, I recommend staying at the Hun Nal Ye Eco Lodge, located within the park. This rustic lodge offers comfortable rooms with stunning views of the surrounding nature. The Candelaria Caves, are a spectacular natural wonder and a must do when visiting Alta Verapaz.. This extensive cave system features stunning stalactites and stalagmites, underground rivers, and breathtaking light beams that filter through natural skylights, revealing glimpses of the jungle above. The caves are also rich in cultural significance, as they are believed to be the entrance to Xibalba, the Mayan underworld.

The Candelaria Caves are near the town of Raxruhá in Alta Verapaz. From Cobán, it’s about a 3-hour drive (approximately 100 kilometers). The roads are well-maintained, making it accessible by car. Guided tours are often available from Cobán, providing a convenient way to reach the caves but my recommendation is to make the trip from Coban early in the morning, visit the caves in the afternoon and stay for the night at Candelaria Lodge before continuing to other destinations like Las Conchas or Hun Nal Ye

I find the caves magical and awe-inspiring, and it’s easy to understand why they were considered sacred to the Mayan people. Discovered by French filmmaker and speleologist Daniel Dreux in the 1980s, the Candelaria Caves are renowned for their natural beauty and cultural importance. Walking through the vast chambers adorned with intricate limestone formations and an underground river flowing through the depths feels like stepping into another world. I love the caves because you can see spectacular light beams filtering through openings in the ceiling, illuminating the cave walls and revealing the vibrant greenery of the jungle outside.
My first visit to the Candelaria Caves was in the 90s, staying at Daniel Dreux’s first lodge. Very few people visited then and even Guatemalans didn’t know about this hidden gem. I went back to the Candelaria Caves with my teen son and my dad this year for his spring break. Things have changed quite a bit but the Candelaria Caves are still an overlooked natural marvel in Guatemla. We visited on a weekday and had the lodge and the caves all to ourselves which was an amazing experience. The tubing tour from Candelaria Lodge was a fantastic adventure I loved sharing with my dad and son, offering a unique perspective of this mystical place.

If you prefer more options, staying in Rio Dulce is a good choice.
