Its a Dia de los Muertos party and we can’t wait to enjoy it!

Dia de los Muertos is popular throughout Mexico, Central and South America. Because it falls near Halloween, and because of the well-known skull imagery, it is confused for the American Halloween festivities. Nothing could be further from reality. Dia de los Muertos is a celebration of life that coincides with the Nov 1st All Souls or All Saints Day; a traditional Catholic holiday celebrated throughout the Latin world. While November 1st is a time to celebrate the lives of the Saints and faithful departed, a blend of the religious with Mayan and Aztec cultural traditions made Dia de Los Muertos the somber, but family-centric, celebration of life it is today.

One of the most common symbols of Dia de los muertos are sugar skulls. Unlike the scary skeletons of Halloween, sugar skulls are “happy” and reflect the lives of deceased relatives they represent. They are often traded among friends as gifts and placed on an altar near a deceased relative’s grave. On these altars you’ll find ofrendas or offerings for the deceased relative, who is believed to be able to “pierce the veil” between death and life, on that one day of the year. In Guatemala, we take it a step further and celebrate by flying huge, colorful kites with messages for our deceased loved ones. We say, “the higher the kite flies, the closer the messages are to heaven.”

The ofrendas you’ll see on Dia de los Muertos altars are both symbolic and reflective of the preferences, in life, the deceased had – like a favorite drink, fruit, or even some delicious chocolates. The hope is that, the relatives can be lured by all their favorite things placed on the altar, to visit for the night. Families spend a lot of money, and time, preparing for this one night of the year, to celebrate the memories of those they have lost.

For our Dia de Los Muertos celebration we are putting together Skull Bucket filled with Mars candies like M&M’s®, SNICKERS® and 7Up 6pk that we purchase at Walmart with all of the necessary things for our fun party.

Skull Bucket:

• Skull printable

• Aluminum Bucket or any other with a similar in size

• Foam sheets -2 whites 1 red -1 blue -1 yellow -1 black

• Glue (Super Glue if an adult is doing craft)

• 2 or 3 plastic flowers

You can use this printable here to print and use to stick on the bucket or use it as a guide like I did.

1. Cut out this “We’ve been BOO’d sign.
2. Fold the “You’ve been BOO’d” greeting card (page 2) and tape openings together.
