This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of National Dairy Council and Latina Bloggers Connect. The opinions and text are all mine.
As a Latino I am well aware of the numbers, I’ve read the studies and I know that in the United States, Hispanic kids are more likely than ANY other ethnic group to be obese. That is why I think it’s very important for us, as Latino parents, to teach by example and promote healthy habits in our homes.
The National Dairy Council, NFL and USDA have collaborated to create the Fuel Up to Play 60 program. With the support of partners like the PepsiCo Foundation the program has expanded to include resources for Hispanic students and families. Fuel Up to Play 60 en español is involved with community groups , schools and parents to ensure that everyone is fueled up for success. While the point of the program is to raise healthier children and reduce childhood obesity, they recognize that health has to be accessible and fun to be effective in the community. For Hispanic parents, the program’s resources areis now available in Spanish, and has easy to implement tips to get your children more physically active and eating healthier.
As a Hispanic parent myself I understand that, culturally, food is a sign of love, affection or even affluence. Of course we want to feed our kids food that is lovingly prepared, but we have to highlight that healthy cooking is the highest form of culinary love we can show our family. And don’t worry, you can still prepare those traditional meals but in a healthier way! The whole family can get involved in getting healthier by clearing out the junk food, cooking healthy meals together or simply putting down the electronics and going outside to play. Getting the family healthier and making the Hispanic obesity crisis a thing of the past is very doable, and Fuel Up to Play 60 eEn español can make it easier and more fun!
If you log onto FuelUpToPlay60.com, you’ll see that the program doesn’t just focus on the home but supports healthy living programs in the community and school. From healthy breakfast and snacking programs to physical fitness challenges, kids are encouraged – and rewarded for making healthier choices in their daily lives. Getting your child involved is totally free, work with his/her school to help sign-up and get started!.
