Antipasto Pizza Rolls

These antipasto pizza rolls are different from other pizza rolls as they do not have any pizza sauce. The warm, and slightly crispy pizza dough surrounds the antipasto while the gooey melted mozzarella cheese holds all of the ingredients together.

These pizza rolls are a favorite after school snack for my kids but they also make a quick dinner. Just pair them with a salad and you have a quick meal that everyone will enjoy and that was easy to make.

My kids love these so much that I have also sent them in their lunch box and they’re so much better for them than anything at the school cafeteria! They’re certainly not just for kids. I can inhale a plate of these and are a fun alternative to a sandwich to take for lunch at work or even for a picnic lunch or road trip on the weekends.

How do I make antipasto pizza rolls?

Making these pizza rolls is pretty easy. It’s very similar to making cinnamon rolls but with savory ingredients. To make them just follow these simple steps:

  1. Start with pizza dough.
  2. Drizzle the pizza dough with olive oil and season to taste. As with antipasto some of the herbs that would pair well with antipasto pizza rolls include basil, oregano and Italian seasoning.
  3. Sprinkle the dough with shredded mozzarella cheese.
  4. Add other antipasto ingredients.
  5. Roll the pizza dough and cut into 1 inch slices.
  6. Bake and serve!

What is antipasto?

Antipasto is a traditional Italian appetizer. Antipasto literally means “before the meal” and it’s usually a platter of Italian cured meats and  vegetables in olive oil or vinegar. Many antipasto recipes also include Italian cheeses like mozzarella, pecorino, Romano, etc.

The key to making a delicious antipasto is using great ingredients and choosing a variety of ingredients that fit your taste. Antipasto recipes vary widely and they can include everything from marinated artichokes and eggplant to salami and olives.

What other ingredients can I use for the antipasto?

One of the things I love about antipasto is that it’s such a versatile dish. Just as with any Italian antipasto your creativity is the limit when it comes to different ingredients to use to make these antipasto pizza rolls.

You can change the ingredients up to match your taste. I sometimes make these with artichokes and marinated sweet bell peppers. Here are some other ingredients you can use to make your antipasto pizza rolls:

  • Dough: you can use homemade pizza dough or store-bought pizza dough. Just make sure you roll your dough into a rectangle. You could also probably use other types of dough like croissant dough to make these.
  • Cheese:  I used both fresh mozzarella as well as shredded mozzarella but feel free to use only one or the other. I also sprinkled these with some parmesan cheese just before serving but parmesan could also be an great option to put inside the pizza rolls. You can always get creative and experiment with other Italian cheeses like Pecorino and Romano.
  • Different Italian meats: for this recipe I used Margherita Italian Dry Salami but these would also be great with Genoa Salami, Pepperoni or Hard Salami. I definitely recommend using Margherita products because they taste great and come in just the right size for making these.
  • Olives: I used Kalamata olives but you can also use green olives, black olives or any marinated olives. Just make sure that you remove the pits and add them sliced up.
  • Vegetables in oil or vinegar: You can use any pickled or marinated vegetables. Two of my favorites to use for making antipasto include marinated mushrooms and marinated artichoke hearts.

Can I freeze the pizza rolls?

You can bake a big batch of these antipasto pizza rolls and freeze them after baking. To freeze wrap in plastic wrap and put in a reusable freezer bag. You can freeze them for up to 3 months. To serve bake frozen rolls at 350F for approximately 20 minutes and serve warm.

Margherita Italian Meats

I always have Margherita products at home. My favorites are the Italian Dry Salami and the Pepperoni. They are perfect for snacking or entertaining and they add so much flavor and depth to so many of my dishes. All of their dry sausage products are high quality and you can really taste the difference.

You can find Margherita products in the deli section of your local supermarket. Besides having the best Italian Dry Salami, they also have other products including Genoa salami, Hard salami, and Pepperoni.
