Of course, you can make these duct tape flip-flops in a myriad of colors, there is such a huge variety of designs when it comes to duct tape! And get creative making double bows or making duct tape flowers instead of bows. It’s a great way to give your flip-flops a makeover this summer!
I have a slight obsession with sugar skulls and the Day of the Dead imagery and I got a roll of Day of the Dead inspired sugar skull duct tape a while ago. I have been wanting to do something with it but had not gotten around to it and it’s been sitting there for about a year. Living in Florida I get to wear flip-flops year round so this seemed like the perfect DIY project for using my sugar skull duct tape. I was pretty happy with the result and just love my new Day of the Dead sugar skull flip-flops. If the weather is as crazy this year as it was last year and we end up not really getting any cooler temperatures until later in the year I might even be able to wear these through summer and fall and up until November when the Day of the Dead comes along.
Sugar Skull Duck Tape Fli-Flops
Supplies:
- Pair of turquoise flip flops or you can also get these black flip-flops for a slightly more formal look
- Roll of sugar skull duct tape
- X-Acto knife
- Ruler
Instructions:
Step 1. Measure a piece of duct tape that is 8 inches long.
Step 2. Measure a second piece of duct tape that is 7 inches long.
Step 3. Turn the 8 inch piece over and measure ¼ inch pieces down each side (as shown).
Step 4. Use the X-acto knife to cut these pieces off each side and set them aside to use later.
Step 5. Take the 7 inch piece and turn it sticky side up. Place the 8 inch piece straight down the middle so that he sticky sides are attached.
Step 6. Fold the sticky edges over the inside piece of tape.
Step 7. Cut one of the edges off the end of the tape.
Step 8. Fold the tape into a circle attaching both ends with the one sticky flap.
Step 9. The place where the ends are attached will be the center. Squeeze the center of the circle to create the look of a bow.
Step 10. Take one of the ¼” strips from Step 4 and wrap half of it around the center to hold it in place.
Step 11. Use the remaining half of the tape to attach it to the flip flop as shown in the photo.
Step 12. Cut a piece of tape that is 5 inches long and cut this in half the long way.
Step 13. Place the first piece of tape on top of the thong straps (as shown) and fold the pieces under to secure. Repeat this step on the other strap.
Step 14. Repeat these steps on the other flip flop to make you matching set.
